Historically CCTV Cameras have been around for over 4 decades known as Analogue Cameras. However with the emergence of  Digital technologies instead of using co-axial cable to connect to a Digital video Recorder(DVR) for CCTV surveillance viewing,  Axis Communication Ltd of Sweden founded around the turn of this century what is today known as  IP Digital Cameras .

So like Computer Networks , today’s IP Cameras sit similarly on a

Network connected with UTP Cable or wireless networks to a

switch that is also connected to a security surveillance server

(sometimes referred to as Network Video Recorder-NVR ) for

viewing. Being a pure digital system ,IP Network camera are

intelligent, unlike the old Analogue cameras. They have an inbuilt

chipset (processor) and over the last 10years enhancements in

technology have made IP Camera very intelligent.

Analog Cameras require a separate power cable to be powered

up, whereas IP Cameras can use the same Ethernet UTP Cable, for power over Ethernet, reducing capex.

Finally,IP Cameras allow system scalability piecemeal therefore over an expansion period requirement becomes very economical. This is not the case with CCTV analogue systems.
